“I try to support initiatives that reflect today’s social reality” – Interview with actress Vica Kerekes

In TANDEM’s new short film Are You There?, you play the role of the mother. What made you take on this role?

I believe it’s very important for a person to stand up for meaningful social causes throughout their life. This becomes even more significant if someone chooses a profession that puts them in the public eye. This “showcase” shouldn't only be used for self-promotion, but also to draw attention to issues that may be marginalized, yet are crucial – even in terms of humanity’s development.

I always try to support initiatives that help the oppressed or reflect the reality of our society today. I believe that human relationships are extremely important in our world. The kind of environment a child grows up in, how much attention they receive from their parents, how much time is spent with them, and how sensitively they are raised – all of these are key factors. Whether parents spend enough time with their children and whether they notice when something is bothering them – this relationship has a profound impact on the child’s future.

What are your thoughts on the dangers young people face on the internet?

We live in a world where the virtual space has a huge influence on us. Perhaps my life is different in the sense that I still remember what it was like to live without the internet, the online world, and computers – and I also know what it’s like now that these things strongly affect us. So maybe I’m in a better position to say no to certain things in the digital space than children who have grown up entirely within it – for whom this is the reality, the norm.

That’s why I think it’s essential to pay close attention to children – to ensure they grow up in a safe environment where they feel free to speak up if something online makes them uncomfortable. It’s important for them to know that there is nothing they can’t share with their parents, friends, or those they consider family.

I think it’s a very positive thing that TANDEM cares about these issues. I’m grateful that they put in energy, heart, and soul – and that they even invest financially – to show the world and our society as a whole that we need to care about each other. They’re raising awareness that what happens to others should matter to us.
