Focus on Active Citizenship – Empower Myself 2025 - 3rd Weekend

In mid-December, the third weekend of the training series was held within the framework of the Empower Myself project. This marked the third occasion we met with the young people participating in the programme.

During this weekend, we continued our work on developing key competencies that support young people in becoming conscious, responsible and active adults.

As part of the Empower Myself Erasmus+ project, our four-weekend career orientation programme was launched at the end of October 2025. The project aims to support young people growing up in socially disadvantaged environments in their career choices and future labour market integration. The programme targets participants aged 14–16 and is delivered through practical, playful and experience-based weekends.

The central theme of the third weekend was active citizenship. Throughout the weekend, the focus was on responsibility, communication, cooperation and community participation. Through group sessions and shared tasks, participants experienced what it means to function responsibly as part of a community, take initiative, think together and cooperate with others.
We are very pleased to see that the young participants have been investing significant effort into the joint process from the very beginning. By the third weekend, this commitment became clearly tangible: participants communicate with increasing confidence, reflect more consciously on their own functioning, and show visible development in critical thinking, future planning and teamwork skills.

It is evident that consistent and dedicated work bears fruit, and that these competencies provide a strong long-term foundation for young people’s future personal development and successful integration into the labour market.

As the Christmas holiday season approached, Sunday was already filled with a festive atmosphere. We concluded our joint work with a feedback exercise based on gift-giving, while tuning in together to the upcoming holidays.

We would like to thank the young participants for their committed involvement and perseverance, the teachers for their supportive and cooperative attitude, the volunteers for their continuous assistance, and the Betlehem Mission Centre in Jelka (Slovakia) for providing the venue.

DiNaMit training in Komárno - Autumn 2025

The DiNaMit training was held in October and November this year for the members of the student council of János Selye High School in Komárno.

The aim of the training, titled DiNaMit – Students, what do we do?, is to help both new and experienced student council members grow into a real community, understand their roles, and jointly outline the goals of the student council for the upcoming school year.

During the programme, participants not only got to know each other better but also gained insight into their own ways of working and their strengths. Already on the first day, it was noticeable how initial uncertainty began to fade and students from different backgrounds gradually formed a team. They worked on tasks that helped them step into their new roles, understand the basic functioning of the student council, and gain motivation for the school year ahead. Several participants noted that by the end of the day, they were able to continue working more effectively and with shared momentum.

On the following days, the training focused on activities that strengthened cooperation, communication, and goal-oriented planning. Some tasks highlighted the importance of effective information sharing, while others allowed participants to experience how solutions can be found quickly and creatively by building on the strengths of the team. The participants’ development became clearly visible: from one activity to the next, they worked together in an increasingly coordinated and conscious way.

An important pillar of the training was the transfer of knowledge from experienced student council members. Building on past experiences, participants jointly defined the values and goals that will guide the work of the student council in the coming year. As a result of this shared reflection, a unified vision for the future emerged.

By the end of the DiNaMit training, students felt more confident in their roles, and their cooperation and communication had significantly strengthened. A community was formed that understands where it is heading and has the strength to achieve its goals together.

DiNaMit is a development programme for secondary school students and schools that wish to make their student councils more conscious and effective. The training enables students to gain hands-on experience in decision-making, community building, and project implementation.

Who is the programme for?
– schools with an existing student council that would like to give the organisation new momentum,
– schools where a student council does not yet exist but where school leadership would like to involve students more actively in school life.

What does the programme offer?
– practical skills (project management, communication, cooperation),
– more motivated and responsible students,
– community-building experiences that strengthen the functioning of the student council.

The program has been completed with the support of the Minority Culture Fund - KULT MINOR.

Financial Literacy Weekend – Empower Myself 2025

In November, we met again with the participants of the Empower Myself project to continue building the development process we began together in October. This time as well, the venue was the Mission Center Bethlehem in Jelka (Slovakia), which provided a safe and inspiring space for learning, shared reflection and meaningful experiences.

The goal of the project Empower Myself is to support young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds in building their future more consciously, responsibly and confidently – whether it’s self-awareness, career orientation or entering the labour market.

The central theme of our second meeting was financial literacy. Building on the self-knowledge and career-orientation foundations gained during the October weekend, this time we explored how to manage money responsibly, intentionally and consciously – both as students and later in independent adult life.

The young participants worked with experiential, non-formal methods: interactive group exercises, small-group discussions, practical situations and games simulating financial decisions.

Among the activities, we also used tools and methods learned through our previous international collaborations – including the Orient Activity and Re.Connection projects. These tools helped ensure that financial topics were not presented as dry theory, but became understandable through real experience.

We closed Saturday with a large, complex cooperative task that strengthened not only teamwork but also leadership skills. The young people experienced what it means to take responsibility for a group, make decisions together and solve a complex challenge in a way that gives everyone a role. Throughout the weekend, we once again saw how much strength, curiosity and developmental potential the group carries. They asked questions bravely, worked actively, and became visibly more confident in topics related to future planning and financial literacy.

We are grateful to the participants for their openness and collaboration, and we extend special thanks to our volunteers, whose background support and organisational help made the weekend smooth and meaningful. We are already looking forward to the new knowledge and experiences the next session will bring!

Virtual Intimacy Zone – Internet Safety Day in Dunajská Streda

On November 4, 2025, the Vámbéry Ármin High School in Dunajská Streda hosted the Virtual Intimacy Zone Internet Safety Day, an event that raised students’ awareness about conscious and safe use of the digital world. Organized by TANDEM, n.o., the event offered an exciting, educational, and experiential way to explore how to navigate the online space responsibly.

Throughout the day, students from classes 1.a, 1.b, 2.a, and 2.b participated in a variety of programs — interactive workshops, thematic stations, and a unique Live Library. The discussions and playful activities focused on current topics such as identifying fake news, protecting personal data, cyberbullying, digital addiction, and preventing online scams.

Morning small-group sessions helped develop self-awareness and critical thinking skills, while the afternoon offered freely selectable stations exploring digital footprints, the impact of artificial intelligence, and the world of misinformation. Students could also relax in the Digital Detox Room and reflect on their own internet habits. One highlight of the day was the interactive theatre workshop by Student Theater group named Fókusz Diákszínpad, led by Katalin Kuklis, creatively addressing the relationship between the online and offline worlds.

It was inspiring to see the students’ active participation and meaningful conversations with experts in a supportive, friendly atmosphere where they confidently shared their thoughts and experiences.

What is an influencer’s daily life like? How does it feel when someone’s accounts are hacked, and their data is stolen before their eyes? How much effort does it take to gain followers on Instagram? Students listened to real-life stories from our Live Books — Maja Gasparik, editor and presenter at Radio Pátria and singer of the band Arizóna; Attila Szlovák, IT security expert from company Motívum s.r.o.; and Kristóf Tóth, CEO and system administrator at company LiveIT s.r.o. — gaining valuable insights and practical safety tips.

Developing digital awareness is essential in young people’s lives today. The event received highly positive feedback from both teachers and students.

We sincerely thank the Vámbéry Ármin High School’s principal, teachers, students, and staff for their warm hospitality and cooperation, as well as our supporter Orange Foundation, our Live Books, trainers, and volunteers.

The Virtual Intimacy Zone is an interactive educational program promoting conscious and safe internet use among high school students. Through small-group activities, games, and thematic stands, students learn to recognize online risks, manage their digital footprint, and think critically about online information.

The program focuses not only on data protection and the technical side of online safety but also on emotional well-being — exploring how social media affects self-esteem and relationships.

Empower Myself 2025 – The First Weekend Workshop Took Place

In October, we held the first weekend of our training program withing the project called Empower Myself. This is our four-session developmental program for young people. The venue was the Mission Center Bethlehem in Jelka (Slovakia), where 20 young participants – from villages Tomášikovo and Jelka – spent a meaningful and experience-rich weekend together.

The aim of project Empower Myself is to support young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds in becoming more self-aware, responsible, and confident as they take steps toward their future, the labour market, and independent living.

Participants arrived on Friday afternoon and began the evening with introductions, group games, and setting the framework for teamwork. From the very first moment, it was clear that an open, curious, and enthusiastic group had come together.

Saturday focused on self-awareness and cooperation: in the morning, various exercises deepened the participants’ self-knowledge, while in the afternoon, outdoor educational experiences helped them test themselves in new situations, develop teamwork and self-expression skills, and experience what it means to create and overcome challenges together. The evening was dedicated to career orientation – through playful and interactive activities, we explored future planning so that participants could envision their personal development paths.

The weekend concluded with self-reflective exercises, giving everyone the chance to look back on their progress and identify areas for further growth. Our goal was to help participants recognize their strengths and face the future with confidence.

This first session was a promising start – an inspiring, experience-filled weekend during which a real community began to form.

We thank all our volunteers for their background work and support, without which this weekend could not have taken place. We are already looking forward to the next weekends to continue the journey together!

Re.Connection – Trainer Training in Galyatető (HU)

Already on our way back from the first ReConnection retreat in Gombasek, in June, we had a feeling that our second meeting at the high-altitude recreational center in Galyatető, Hungary, would in all likelihood be an equally valuable and profound experience. Trainers and professionals are grateful to have time and space for self-reflection, connection at the level of identity, and recharging their energy. Forest. Close contact with nature. Play. Inspiring topics and pulsating questions, decades of experience, heartfelt approach, open communication, a dose of humor and self-irony. And even more play.

The TANDEM team did not attend the professional workshop titled “Experiential Educational Tools and Trauma-Sensitive Approach”, held in mid-September at Galyatető without purpose. In fact, we are intensively preparing to launch our own groups for disadvantaged youth, an area where Élményakadémia Közhasznú Egyesület, as our partner, has extensive experience. We considered it important that our professionals also receive professional support and space for growth.

At the same time, we knew we were entering a community where we would spend meaningful time with colleagues working with an approach very similar to ours.

We knew we would get to experience the methods of outdoor experiential education firsthand — this was exactly the kind of training we expected.

However, it’s impossible to truly prepare for just how far outside our comfort zone we stepped multiple times during those five days. We climbed a seven-meter-high special wooden post. We balanced on an incredibly high V-shaped slackline. We hiked through hills and valleys for more than seven hours in difficult conditions. Throughout it all, we secured and supported each other, and sometimes carried various burdens together. This controlled loss of control is an unforgettable experience—even though part of your mind knows that everything is completely safe, your body still shivers.

Thanks to the work and dedicated attention of Élményakadémia Közhasznú Egyesület, the TANDEM team went through experiences of feeling lost, building trust, mutual reliance, and free-spirited childlike play — all coming together like a professional autumn cleaning and a vitamin boost in one.

It is amazing to have such partners and playmates. We are already looking forward to the next opportunity!

Empower Myself 2025

The non-profit organization TANDEM announces a 4-weekend training program for young people aged 14–16, who want to face the challenges of adult life with greater self-confidence. Participants can look forward to practical, playful, and experience-based weekends, during which they will get to know themselves better and acquire skills that will provide a solid foundation for entering the world of work.

The training is intended primarily for young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds and children’s homes – for them, participation is free of charge.

The goal of the Empower Myself program is for young people to gain new skills and confidence, to navigate everyday life more easily, and to be prepared for further studies or entering the labor market. The program is designed for those living in situations where support is especially valuable – whether in a children’s home, in difficult financial circumstances, with illness in the family, or in foster care – and who need guidance in the following areas:

better understanding themselves,
how to use social media and the online world wisely,
how to manage money responsibly and what to watch out for in everyday situations,
becoming braver, more confident, and learning to believe in themselves.

What does the program offer?

Self-knowledge and career orientation – support in recognizing strengths and consciously planning the future
Personal development and self-confidence – more confident decision-making, strengthening personal values and motivations

Labyrinth Courtyard - Gombaszög Summer Camp 2025

Between July 15 and 20, we once again took part in the festival named Gombaszögi Nyári Tábor ("Gombaszög Summer Camp"), where the TANDEM team created a safe and inspiring space for visitors – the Labyrinth Courtyard. A joyful novelty this year was its expansion: for the first time, our programs ran simultaneously in three tents.

This was the little island where one could step out of the bustle of the festival and surrender to silence, slowing down and recharging. A community gathered here, connected by a shared interest in self-knowledge, personal growth, and mindful presence – all set against the colorful background of concerts, cultural shows, community games, and discussions of social topics.

The Labyrinth Courtyard, organized by the TANDEM non-profit organization, hosted a wide variety of programs throughout the week, all supporting inner exploration and self-discovery. The mission of our organization remained the same: to encourage people on the path toward becoming more conscious individuals through self-awareness and responsibility. We brought a rich selection of activities to the festival: workshops, inspiring talks, self-development tools, game-testing, storytelling, and of course, the unique experience of walking the labyrinth.

Every morning began with a devotional by the Fellowship of Young Reformed Christians (Firesz), offering spiritual reflection. During the day, visitors could relax in the tea house with special teas and refreshing lemonades, while in the labyrinth walks – guided by Péter Halász, Alma Halász, Kriszta Molnár, and Péter Urbán – they embarked on deep inner journeys.

On Tuesday, we built the labyrinth together – a tradition that frames the entire week. In the afternoon, under the guidance of Kriszta Molnár and Péter Halász, the organizing team and staff members walked the labyrinth together. It was a special experience, followed by meaningful conversations that helped us prepare more consciously for the week ahead and connect more deeply with one another. In the evening, the opening session of the VándorLáss series took place: Peti Halász and Zoltán “Kovi” Kovács, founder of VándorLáss non profit organization, guided us through a remarkable motorcycle journey – 2300 kilometers across Northern Thailand, a story interwoven with shamanism, adventure, and self-discovery – ending, quite literally, with a bang.

On Wednesday, as part of the Firesz program, Eszter Áfra gave an insightful lecture about the relationship between faith and professional sports. Dorian Vida shared a personal testimony about walking the Camino de Santiago, showing us how a long-anticipated journey can be full of unexpected turns. In the early afternoon, Zoltán “Kovi” Kovács spoke with Rózsa Katona and Domonkos Kovács about why practicing yoga as a pair can be such a unique and meaningful experience. During the mindfulness workshop, Anita Mellár Mezei helped participants find silence amidst inner noise. The evening brought us the inspiring stories of Attila “Etil” Budai, the world traveler, who showed us through his adventures that every outward journey is also a profound inner adventure. The day closed with an interactive lecture by Péter Urbán, exploring the theme of how (not) to communicate – a talk that was both humorous and deeply thought-provoking.

On Thursday, Anita Mellár Mezei and Péter Halász combined mindfulness with a labyrinth walk. Those who experienced it – or even just observed – could say it was a profound yet liberating encounter. In the afternoon, an introspective workshop took place led by Kriszta Molnár, titled Journey to Myself. As one participant put it: “It wasn’t just a conversation, but a true journey of self-discovery. Kriszta’s gentle guidance and supportive presence created a safe, non-judgmental space for us to go deeper within ourselves.” Firesz also brought important topics to the stage on this day: Péter Pandy spoke about faith and responsibility in the context of public life, while Jonatán Acsay explored the relationship between entrepreneurial ambition and Christian values. Later, László Kollár-Klemencz, musician and writer, visited us to talk about the bond between humans and animals, as well as his book "Anyám tenyere" (My Mother’s Palm). Meeting him in person was both heartwarming and inspiring. In the evening, as part of the VándorLáss series, Zoltán Lencsés and Kriszta Molnár shared their experiences of wandering through the Sahara and their Moroccan journeys, in a conversation guided by Kovi.

On Friday, after the morning devotion and the labyrinth walk, we turned our focus to inner resources. The workshop Family Patterns – Blessing or Curse?, led by Brigi Ujfalusiné Buzder, explored our generational heritage through family constellations. In the Firesz program, Veronika Horváth, a lawyer, spoke about our approach to work from a Christian perspective. In the afternoon, one of the highlights was the much-loved “Ask the Priest” discussion, where Father Patrik Balázs, Pastor Tibor Lóczy, and Pastor Árpád Molnár answered the audience’s questions – and those who asked were even rewarded with surprise refreshments. Throughout the day, we also addressed self-awareness and psychological topics: forest bathing with Anett Zlatarits Iván, art therapy workshop “My Self-Image in Pictures” with Zsuzsanna Borka Beňo, interactive lecture on altered states of consciousness by psychologist Róbert Mikus. Our visitors could experience the Board game on topic of sustainable menstruation, connected to one of our projects. In the evening, Kovi shared stories from his life-changing journey in Peru – about the Amazon, Inca heritage, and the Andes. Listeners felt as if they were traveling alongside him.
The true highlight of the day was the lecture by Father Feri Pál: “What Helps Us Through Life’s Impossible Situations?” We laughed, we cried, and we took home countless valuable lessons. As the festival’s magazine Vadalma wrote: “This year, Father Feri spoke especially about the healing power of art, community, and empathy. He emphasized that you don’t always have to say something clever when someone is suffering. Sometimes it is enough to simply say: ‘I’m here.’ A hug. A plate of cookies. A photo looked at together. A gesture that says: you are not alone. Sometimes that means more than any grand words or lessons.”

On Saturday, a group of enthusiastic and inspiring young people – Alma Halász, Gáspár Bondor, and Barnabás Kovács – shared what the world of Dungeons & Dragons means to them. It became clear that this game is not only entertainment but also a deep form of creative self-expression and a source of friendships. Zsuzsanna Varga and János Hushegyi led a workshop on intimacy and personal boundaries. We also heard a mission story from Attila Borsi, theologian and Reformed pastor. In the forest, Anett Zlatarits Iván guided participants through a tree-drawing analysis, helping them gain new perspectives in the closeness of nature. The theme of sustainable menstruation continued at our designated stand. Evelyn Asiama delivered a colorful, energetic, and highly engaging lecture about the many meanings of eating. Later, Kovi spoke about Zen, and the day concluded with Kinga Pattermann’s presentation, where we explored important areas of life while engaging our intuition.

On Sunday, we woke up to a calmer atmosphere. The festival area slowly quieted down. The tea house welcomed its last guests, and the official program of the festival ended with an ecumenical service. Finally, we dismantled the Labyrinth together and said goodbye to its lavender-scented paths. Gratitude filled our hearts: the shared conversations, the quiet or joyfully loud moments, the laughter, and the inspiring lectures all remain with us.

We thank everyone who joined us at the Labyrinth Courtyard! We are deeply grateful to our visitors, our speakers, and our fantastic support team – it was a true joy to work together! Every organizer and crew member contributed with maximum dedication and teamwork to make our programs successful. Thank you!

As we said farewell to each other and to the valley, we looked back one last time from the festival gate with grateful hearts, setting off for home with the hope that next year, in 2026, we will meet again at the Gombaszög Summer Camp in the Labyrinth Courtyard.

Compass Project – community, approach, practical knowledge for professionals working with young people

In June 2025, the joint Compass vol.2 (Iránytű vol.2) project, implemented by the foundation Játszótér Közhasznú Alapítvány ("Playground Public Benefit Foundation") from Hungary, TANDEM n.o., and Harghita Business Center from Romania, with the support of the European Union, came to a close.

The aim of the initiative was to create long-term, practical, and professionally grounded tools for teachers, youth workers, trainers, and civil sector professionals. The development focused on three main areas: career planning, career orientation, and supporting entrepreneurship – with special attention to making these topics more accessible, playful, and engaging for young people.

What made the Compass project special was that it not only offered a new set of teaching materials but also laid the foundations for a professional community – a safe and supportive space where participants could share their dilemmas, methods, and experiences. The joint work resulted in three practice-oriented training programmes, along with methodological collections and preparatory video materials, all freely available through the project’s website. The teaching resources include various types of supporting materials: self-awareness workbooks, experiential games, goal-setting exercises, as well as simulations and planning tools to foster entrepreneurial thinking. In addition, the Compass team created numerous supplementary digital tools, including an online escape room, motivational cards, quizzes, and video content, all of which are also freely accessible.

Nearly seventy professionals took part in the trainings, workshops, and professional activities, while an active online community also emerged. The Compass website features more than ten professional articles and recommendations, which not only help in applying the materials but also broaden professional perspectives. Feedback showed that the Compass project did more than transfer knowledge – it also had a transformative effect on attitudes: many participants reported feeling more confident and structured in supporting young people on their career paths, while the materials encouraged independent thinking, self-awareness, and exploring internal motivation. The modules aimed at developing entrepreneurial skills also helped strengthen initiative and independence.

The importance of community learning remained central throughout the project. The Compass project series did not end with the closure of this phase – the materials remain available on the Compass website and can be integrated into individual or institutional practices. The the foundation Játszótér Közhasznú Alapítvány (HU) will continue to share knowledge within the community and welcomes all professionals who wish to support youth work in a conscious and transformative way.

Members of the Compass community meet regularly at professional events, which are announced on the project’s website as well as on the foundation Játszótér Közhasznú Alapítvány (HU) Facebook and Instagram pages. Anyone wishing to join a supportive and inspiring professional network is welcome. The project team gladly welcomes any feedback, experience, or ideas, as these help ensure that the results of the Compass projects remain truly usable, living, and evolving tools.

This year again, The Life is a Game - Experience Conference is coming – for (not only) teachers!
