Virtual Intimacy Zone Training in Rimavská Sobota

Between April 4–6, 2025, the members of the student council at the Tompa Mihály Reformed High School in Rimavská Sobota took part in a Virtual Intimate Zone training. The aim of the three-day workshop was to raise students’ awareness of internet use, help them recognize the dangers of the digital space, and develop skills that would support their ability to navigate the ever-changing online world.

On Friday afternoon, the students arrived at the dormitory, where—after an introductory circle and shared dinner—we addressed a sensitive yet important topic: the concept of online harassment. We discussed its various forms, with particular emphasis on cyberbullying, explored possible methods of prevention, and highlighted the importance of asking for help.

Saturday morning began with a check-in circle, followed by a focus on identifying fake news and online scams. Afterward, the students engaged in a playful activity to reflect on their own internet habits: using colored papers, they created a “digital schedule” that illustrated how and for what purposes they use the internet during different parts of the week.
We explored the concept of a digital footprint in more depth: participants reflected on which websites they were registered on, what kind of content they shared, what they liked, and which platforms they visited regularly. We also discussed security settings, how cookies work, the significance of incognito mode, and the use of antivirus software and ad blockers.
A particularly exciting part of the morning was when students learned that, according to statistics, anyone in the world can be reached through six appropriate connections—an effective illustration of the reach and interconnectedness of the online world.

On Saturday evening, we dealt with the dangers lurking in the digital space. The topic was introduced through thought-provoking questions that encouraged deeper reflection and the expression of opinions. A key focus of the conversation was the responsibility of influencers—does it really matter what kind of content they share with their followers?
The day ended with a screening of a documentary related to the topic, followed by a group discussion. Students shared their thoughts and feelings, and many highlighted how shocking and thought-provoking the film was for them.

On Sunday morning, to wrap up the weekend, students began preparing mini-projects: working in groups, they brainstormed how to pass on the knowledge they had acquired to their peers at school. Everyone found their own role within the team as tasks were divided.

The Virtual Intimate Zone weekend in Rimavská Sobota was a meaningful experience that not only provided valuable knowledge to the participants, but also gave them space for shared reflection, connection, and more conscious internet use. By the end of the program, students had not only become better prepared to face the challenges of the digital world, but also felt inspired to share their newly acquired knowledge with their communities and friends.
